Professor Jens O. Brunner is a professor at DTU Management in the Department of Technology, Management, and Economics. He specializes in Decision Science in Healthcare, focusing on optimizing hospital operations, resource management, workforce planning, and medical decision support. At the University of Augsburg, Germany, he established and headed a center for health sciences at the University Hospital Augsburg. He conducted many projects with clinicians, improving hospital logistics, operating room scheduling, and personnel allocation, amongst others, and implemented the research in practical settings. His main research interests center on the design and analysis of healthcare (delivery) service systems using quantitative methods. Professor Brunner is a internationally recognized expert in healthcare operations and healthcare analytics. He is Editor in Chief for Operations Research, Data Analytics, and Logistics and Department Editor for Health Care Management Science. His work has been published in IISE Transaction, Health Care Management Science, European Journal of Operational Research, INFORMS Journal on Computing etc. Professor Brunner received many prestigious grands, e.g., from the Horizon Europe, the German Research Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany), and the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Care, and Prevention In 2015, Professor Brunner and colleagues were awarded the Harold W. Kuhn Award for the best published paper in Naval Research Logistics. In 2016, Professor Brunner and colleagues were under the finalists for the EURO Excellence in Practice Award with their research project: Duty and Workstation Rostering Considering Preferences and Fairness: A Case Study at a Department of Anesthesiology. In 2022, Professor Brunner and his team won the IISE/SSE Outstanding Innovation in Service Systems Engineering Award for their Covid-19 research and they were finalists in the IISE QCRE/ProcessMiner Data Challenge Competition. In 2023, he received the Research Impact Award at Department of Technology, Management, and Economics.
At DTU, Professor Brunner collaborates primarily with Region Zealand, applying his methodologies to improve hospital efficiency in Denmark. He also collaborate with the enter for Excellence in Healthcare Operations Planning (Next Generation Technology, Slagelse Hospital, Region Zealand, Denmark). His work addresses the increasing demand for healthcare services and limited resources by developing advanced planning solutions using digital technologies.

The key research areas encompass behavioral and climate economics, energy policy, environmental psychology, machine learning, and supply chain management, with a particular focus on a wide range of industrial and service sectors, including manufacturing, services, transportation, and healthcare. Additional areas of interest include operations research, organizational studies, and transport systems.
