Kirsten Nørgaard is a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Copenhagen, Head of Diabetes Technology Research, and Senior Consultant at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen. She specializes in the development and optimization of diabetes technologies, with a particular focus on insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), and algorithm-driven clinical decision-support tools aimed at improving diabetes management.

Her research encompasses several major projects, including the StenoTech Study, which investigates predictors of optimal outcomes in insulin pump therapy, and ABC Flash, a study comparing the effectiveness of carbohydrate-counting applications, bolus calculators, and CGM in people with type 1 diabetes treated with insulin pens. She is also actively involved in both closed-loop and open-loop studies focused on the development and evaluation of automated insulin delivery systems, including dual-hormone artificial pancreas solutions.

Kirsten Nørgaard has also contributed to the iPDM-Go Project, which aimed to develop a digital communication tool to enhance consultations between people with type 2 diabetes and healthcare professionals. Furthermore, she has led the development of the Stenopool Platform, which integrates data from insulin pumps, CGM systems, and blood glucose meters to support clinical decision-making, quality improvement, and research.

In addition, she leads the Ward CGM Project, which investigates glucose fluctuations in hospitalized patients with the goal of developing a real-time alert system for healthcare professionals. She has also been involved in the development of several international clinical guidelines for the treatment of type 1 diabetes.

Kirsten Nørgaard collaborates with leading research institutions and hospitals, including DTU Compute, Zealand Pharma, North Zealand Hospital Hillerød, Rigshospitalet, several Danish diabetes research centers, and numerous international research institutions and industry partners.

 

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is an internationally recognized center for diabetes care, research, prevention, and education. Its research activities encompass both clinical and translational research, as well as research in prevention, health promotion, and community-based care.

The Department of Clinical and Translational Research consists of six research groups focusing on clinical epidemiology, diabetes complications, diabetes technology, and translational research in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as cardiometabolic prevention. The overall objective is to translate scientific discoveries into improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes.

Research within prevention, health promotion, and community-based care aims to bridge the gap between research and real-world practice through interdisciplinary collaborations across healthcare systems, municipalities, research institutions, and civil society organizations, both nationally and internationally. The goal is to develop sustainable solutions that improve quality of life for people living with diabetes and reduce the burden of disease across populations.
