Josef Peter Helmut Oehmen

Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Design and Manufacturing systems

E-mail: Jooehm@dtu.dk

Josef Oehmen, PhD, MBA, is an Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where he conducts research in systems engineering, risk management, and organizational resilience. He serves as Head of Studies for the MSc programme Design & Innovation at DTU, where he teaches human-centred engineering design.

Josef leads initiatives that integrate AI functionalities into engineering workflows and develops design methods focused on health and human dignity. His research explores how large-scale engineering programmes can effectively manage risk, uncertainty, and ignorance throughout the design, development, and implementation phases.

Prior to joining DTU, Josef Oehmen held research positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and ETH Zurich, where he also earned his PhD in Engineering Management.

Josef is a board member of IDA Risk and a member of the ATV Transformation Lab. His work has been recognized through a number of prestigious awards, including the Shingo Prize for Lean Engineering Program Management (2013), the INCOSE Collaboration Award (2012), and several awards for excellence in teaching and research.

The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering advances science and technical knowledge for the benefit of society and sustainable development. The department conducts high-quality research, education, and innovation in areas such as building design and construction, energy and materials technology, fluid and solid mechanics, and engineering design and manufacturing.

Within the department, the Engineering Design and Manufacturing Systems Section focuses on developing sustainable systems, products, and services, as well as increasing innovation efficiency and effectiveness. Its research addresses major societal challenges through four main areas: Conceptualization, Product/Service-Systems, Robust Design, and Modular Product Architecture Development.
These efforts aim to create quantitative models that guide early design decisions regarding cost, quality, and environmental impact; to develop circular economy and sustainability-driven design strategies; and to build frameworks that improve product robustness, reduce development time, and enhance manufacturing quality.

The section’s work provides the theoretical foundations and practical methods that support synthesis and decision-making in modern engineering design and product development.
