Professor Jens O. Brunner is a Professor at DTU Management, Department of Technology, Management and Economics. He specializes in decision sciences in healthcare, with a focus on hospital operations optimization, resource management, workforce planning, and medical decision support.

At the University of Augsburg in Germany, he established and led a Center for Health Sciences at Augsburg University Hospital. Through extensive collaboration with clinicians, he has contributed to improving hospital logistics, surgical scheduling, and staff allocation, while also translating research findings into clinical practice. His primary research interests focus on the design and analysis of healthcare delivery systems using quantitative methods.

Professor Brunner is an internationally recognized expert in healthcare operations and healthcare analytics. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Operations Research, Data Analytics and Logistics and Department Editor for Health Care Management Science. His research has been published in leading scientific journals, including IISE Transactions, Health Care Management Science, European Journal of Operational Research, and INFORMS Journal on Computing.

Throughout his career, Professor Brunner has received numerous prestigious research grants and awards, including funding from Horizon Europe, the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the Bavarian State Ministry of Health, Care and Prevention. In 2015, he and his co-authors received the Harold W. Kuhn Award for the best published paper in maritime logistics research. In 2016, he was a finalist for the EURO Excellence in Practice Award for the project Duty and Workstation Rostering Considering Preferences and Fairness: A Case Study at a Department of Anesthesiology. In 2022, Professor Brunner and his team received the IISE/SSE Outstanding Innovation in Service Systems Engineering Award for their Covid-19-related research and were finalists in the IISE QCRE/ProcessMiner Data Challenge Competition. In 2023, he was awarded the Research Impact Award at DTU Management.

At DTU, Professor Brunner collaborates primarily with Region Zealand, where he applies his methods to improve efficiency across Danish hospitals. He also collaborates with the Excellence in Healthcare Operations Planning initiative (Next Generation Technology, Slagelse Hospital, Region Zealand). His research addresses the growing demand for healthcare services and the challenge of limited resources by developing advanced planning solutions based on digital technologies.

 

DTU Management

The key research areas encompass behavioral and climate economics, energy policy, environmental psychology, machine learning, and supply chain management, with a particular focus on a wide range of industrial and service sectors, including manufacturing, services, transportation, and healthcare. Additional areas of interest include operations research, organizational studies, and transport systems.
